I used sandpaper 80, 100 and finally 120 for pine and poplar. I used sandpaper 100, 120 and finally 150 for Maple and Birch. I sanded last part with hand in all items. 

I've prepared few sample

                                             

I decided to paint my toolbox according this sample. After sanding first yellow and then red.

I decided to paint shaker shelf according the sample. After sanding first manoir and then laquer.

I put laquer on top of this.

for this picture frame I put 3 coats of white laquer  and sanded after every coat. applied green and wiped up that and after that wipe on white. I sanded a little bit and applied wax.  

Antiquing our way to framedome.
